Medical Records Store Relocation

With ongoing capital works across the St. Peters Hospital Site, Ashford & St. Peters Hospital NHS Trust required their medical records to be stored in a centralised location to facilitate conversion to electronic files and release storage space elsewhere.

A redundant cook / chill kitchen on the site was refurbished to provide the desired storage facilities with the main M&E plant adapted and replaced to serve the facility and minimise the fabric alteration required.

The mechanical services works reused one of the existing air handling units to provide tempered air to the storage areas to prevent detoriation of the paper records awaiting conversion and providing a cost effective solution over the projected lifetime of the facility. The plant is supported with a central boiler system and local water heating and extract ventilation for the staff facilities.

New lighting, small power and data services are provided throughout the facility utilising existing infrastructure with new fire, intruder alarm and access control systems installed to integrate the building in the trust wide systems.

We have a very good track record in Healthcare and should you want to discuss a project please contact Eric Marsh on 01489 783 333.

St. Johns House, Winchester

St John's House

EMDC were appointed by the Winchester YMCA to design the M&E services in connection with the internal refurbishments to form a new ‘youth café’ in the redundant undercroft. The grade one listed structure required great care to ensure the services installations cause minimal damage and aesthetically match the Saxon masonry.

The installations are custom designed to suit the building, the available energy sources and allow the systems to be expanded and moved to ‘greener’ energy sources as they become available. The design schemes are tightly integrated with the architectural layout and the client requirements.

The atmosphere of the room can be changed from simple working environment to café and thorough to a nightclub feel very simply using the varied low energy lighting solutions. Specific features are highlighted and the services discreetly integrated with the building works whilst not damaging the building fabric of historic value.

The services installations are kept simple to minimise cost whilst not detracting from the atmosphere of the space and providing low energy consumption and easy upgrade pathways.

Westover Primary School

Westover School

The project provided a new reception area, cloakrooms and a SEN teaching space to the school. The works formed part of a multi-phase extension and refurbishment programme at the school. EMDC provided a full design and supervision for the mechanical and electrical services with ongoing advice and guidance as the works progressed on site.

The services installations are extensions of the existing school systems where possible and are concealed in the highly architectural building fabric. The existing installations are of various ages and the connection points for the extension services are considered carefully to avoid unnecessary infrastructure upgrades.

The building services comprise of:

  • Electric underfloor heating with local controllers
  • Point of use water heaters and distribution pipework
  • Local extract ventilation of humidity and temperature control
  • Integrated lighting schemes to suit each space
  • Small power, IT and Telecoms services
  • New fire detection system throughout the school
  • Extension and modification to the existing intruder detection and access control systems

Kinson Library, Bournemouth

Kinson Library

The new Kinson Hub Library was a new build replacement for the existing single storey Kinson Library that had served the community well but was beyond its useful and effective working life. The new building houses not only the library but interview rooms, housing and other community activities.

EMDC were commissioned to carry out the full design for the M&E services and provide onsite project management and budget advice in association with the building services.

At the early stages of design it was agreed that the new Hub should be energy efficient, green and sustainable to the community for the future and assist in securing lottery funding by achieving a BREEAM rating of very good.

The building services comprise of:

  • Natural ventilation automatically controlled by an array of sensors monitoring the environment conditions
  • Underfloor heating, linked with the ventilation operation
  • High efficiency PIR/PEC controlled lighting
  • In-screed trunking system (providing some flexibility) housing the extensive IT services and small power
  • Safety systems comprising of , automatic fire detection, assistance and panic alarms, intruder detection and lightning protection

Corsham Regis Primary School

Corsham Regis Primary School

The works consisted of a fully integrated extension housing new classrooms, welfare facilities, offices and meeting rooms. The existing facilities were taken into the extension and the existing classrooms improved.

The extension continues the existing features of the school providing new services installations to reduce running costs and provide full regulation compliance to the new build. New external lighting in association with the landscape works dramatically changes the approach to the school. The systems and works were sequenced in conjunction with the building works to minimise disruption to the existing school.

The building services comprise of:

  • New high efficiency condensing boilers with radiator heating
  • Full calorifier and local hot water generation systems
  • Independent electrical supply to adjacent Childrens Centre
  • Integrated daylight and occupation sensing automatic lighting
  • Small power, IT and Telecoms services
  • New fire detection system incorporating the existing school
  • Extension of the existing CCTV and security systems.

Portsmouth Girls School Floodlighting

Portsmouth Girl's School

EMDC provided a full design and supervision service to Portsmouth City council to install floodlighting to the multi use games area at the City of Portsmouth Girls School. EMDC provided a full design specification package including sports lanterns, columns and electrical works including an independant electrical supply optimising the column and lamp positions to allow half switching of the installation.

The detailed design proposals take into account the stringent planning conditions for a city residential area, the limitations of the congested site, restriction in glare and light pollution spillage to both the neighbouring houses and major roads and the needs of the school in operation and continued maintenance.

We were required to produce plots of the design lux levels and isolines to show the expected spread of the light and obtain planning approval.

Our appointment was then to act as contract administrators which required us to project manage, supervise and finance check the project on behalf of the client. This ensured the continued operation of the school facilities throughout the works. EMDC undertook the co-ordination of electrical and lighting works, civil and structural works involving a diverse client team as and when necessary.

On completion of the project we then inspected the site at night to confirm the installation was as designed. It was discovered that some of the luminaires were incorrectly positioned, these were corrected and the required result was achieved.
